Artist Statement

As an artist I am constantly enveloping my everyday life with ideas and concepts that I want to work with. These ideas and fascinations fuel my creativity driving me to pursue my goal. Many of these concepts are inspired from my personal life, dreams, the environment, and the people I meet daily. With these vision in mind I mentally train myself and prepare all the materials necessary to create my conceptual piece. This year I intend to sharpen my skills as an artist and inspire others like those before me. Enable to improve I most work vigorously with full passion and determination. Knowing this I want to learn more as a artist and as a human being by growing psychologically.

Proposal

For my first sculpture I would like to experiment with materials and concepts that are completely new to me. The piece I have created is constructed completely out of manmade objects and searches the subject of space, contained space to me exact. This piece was inspired by two artist: Jeongmoon Choi and Damien Hirst. However, I was mostly inspired by South Korean artist Jeongmoon Choi and her work with UV lighting that made drawings in space. These installations are very unique and almost unheard of anywhere else. For this sculpture I used a blowtorch to melt plexiglass and some plastic rods together. After I used colored tissue paper to envelop some areas of the glass.
The sculpture I created is somewhat of a study of new materials and what they are capable of. I am planning to experiment more and create more small works as well as revise my piece. I see much needed work ahead in my journey to completing this assignment. This experience however will teach me the importance of the process and research involved with creating a sculpture. I think this work will be very beneficial to me as an artist, student, and person. The name of this piece is Luminescence because it gives a sense of light using the colors and glass but does not have a heat source of light. Light plays with the effect of depth and space in glass, which is why transparency and reflection are key to this project. During this piece I was dealing with limited space and tried to work with the relation between the materials used and the effect it gives. I was intrigued by the imitation of space and depth that the plexiglass gave and decided to play with it. By using these geometric materials I was able to create a new organic mass.
The plastic rods were used to fuse the plexiglass together because when the rods melted they served as a substitute for glue. I experimented with this technique on several spare rods and shards of plexiglass. I currently only have a few small works however, but plan to have many more soon. I believe this sculpture was a great success and shows how far where I have come as an artist.
